Meine digitalen Untergang

(Pretty hairy: the latest version of iTunes, left)

So, iTunes hates my iPod. My iPod probably hates iTunes in return. I am getting close to hating both the programme and the shiny gadget.

See, iTunes keeps telling me that it can't copy to the drive. I think that was the error message. It was so rude and uncalled for that I've conveniently blocked it out. In essence, what I think iTunes was saying was "I hate your taste in music. Ditch that obscure stuff and download some Shakira instead, smarty pants."

I digress.

Sometimes iTunes and the iPod would synch and all would be happy. Then, when they synched none of the newly uploaded stuff would appear.

Then the synch started happening at a snail's pace.

I could live with that, but not with the sloth-paced synch. And mid-way through a four-hour synch, iTunes would spit the dummy, claiming it couldn't read anything.

When the sloth-synch first started happening, the synch would get as far as N. Then L. Over the weekend it got to I and gave up.

I've restarted the machine on occasion. That doesn't work. Then I tried resetting the iPod a few times. That was a waste of hard-won hand-eye co-ordination skills.

After that, all I could think of doing was seeing whether restoring the factory settings to the iPod helped. It seemed like a good idea. Wrong.

The synch after that? iTunes uploaded four - four! - tracks to the iPod and spat out another "I give up. And by the way? Ms Wilfully Obscure? Your taste in music sucks the big kumera and I refuse to have any part of this pathetic charade" message.

So now I'm planning to reinstall iTunes, copy across music library again (did I mention how much I love my external HD?) and hope for the best. Fingers crossed.

** Late breaking news **

Broken. iTunes broke my iPod. My iPod broke iTunes. The gremlins broke the external HD. All of them broke my heart. It's a luxury problem, I know, but right now? There's a small world of music and it's gone.

Guess Edwyn Collins is right. Rip it up and start again.
